What is Bankfield musuem all about?
The Bankfield museum has a growing reputation as a centre for textiles and contemporary craft.
A Museum since 1887, Bankfield is now home to an internationally important collection of textiles and costumes from around the world. Items such as Mummy wrappings and teddy bears; a Diaghilev ballet costume and Igbo masquerade dress; embroideries from India and China; woven cloth from Africa and Burma, all have their place in this quite wonderful musuem.
With many amazing objects from around the world, plus commissions by leading makers and a varied programme of exhibitions and events, there is much to see and enjoy.
Why not visit the Toy Gallery, the Duke of Wellington’s Regimental Museum and the Marble Gallery, a new selling space for contemporary craft.
What should I look out for?
Pride of place belongs to the unique collection of textiles from Eastern Europe collected by Edith Durham, traveller and collector in the Balkans from 1900-1914.
