Community Involvement

There is a strong commitment across Halifax to work together for the benefit of all communities. Many partnerships have worked together on In Bloom over the past few years. These include people from public sector organisations, private companies and voluntary and community groups. They have all helped to promote the social, economic and environmental success of Halifax In Bloom. Entry into the competition has provided a platform for all the people of Halifax to shape their own future.

Here’s a quick snap shop of the types of projects which have been undertaken by our community:

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School
Having a park on your doorstep is ideal for anyone, but to have this opportunity as a primary school lends itself to the creation of a green classroom. Pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary have become lifelong friends of People’s Park and regularly use the park for outdoor lessons, lessons from Greek mythology and history, through art, geography and the environment. Only recently have the school held their annual sports day in the park, which was a great opportunity to generate play and activity into a Victorian park space.

Whitehill J & I School
Whitehill J & I School have continued to enjoy working with the Town Centre Ambassadors on an annual basis to plant bulbs in the planters at the Woolshops Shopping Centre.

Poster Competition
As part of a competition the local schools have been encouraged to design Halifax In Bloom posters for the last few years.

Calderdale Cares
Calderdale Cares is an organisation matching local businesses with volunteering opportunities. Halifax In Bloom has been an ideal way of encouraging businesses within Halifax to take pride in the town and get behind a tree-mendous initiative that will put Halifax firmly on the UK map as a town of partnership, innovation and forward thinking.

Calderdale Cares have been involved alongside local businesses with environmental clean-ups, litter picking, sustainable planting schemes and garden restoration and much more. Calderdale Cares also set up ‘The Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery’. This is a group of local people who have joined together in an attempt to preserve the fabric and the history of the cemetery. They work in may ways, undertaking environmental projects to encourage wildlife, flora and fauna in what is now a heavily built-up area of the town.

These are just a few of the community schools and groups alongside businesses who regularly support Halifax In Bloom throughout the year.
